What are the causes of a red/swollen portion of a toe, near the nail?

My big toe on the right foot has a swollen portion, near where the nail and skin meets. It flares up every now and then and does not seem to correlate with getting a pedicure or my nails cut. What could be causing this, my toe rubbing up against my shoe or infection? What should I do to fix it?

Could be the type of shoes you wear. The top of the red area could be rubbing up against thread fibers that can harden overtime. If it turns into a bubble, then watch out-could be athlete's foot. What are the causes of a red/swollen portion of a toe, near the nail?
It sounds like the start of an ingrown toenail. Soak your foot in warm water for 15 minutes a day. If that doesn't help, then see your doc.
If it persist or begins to bleed you may want to see a doctor. Could potentially be an ingrown toe nail.
