My toddler stumped his toe & nail is lifted from nail bed. Should I put a bandaide on it or let it go?

It is lifted from the top portion but attached by the cuticle. Called peds. but he was very vague. It isn't infected, but I don't want it to end up that way.My toddler stumped his toe %26amp; nail is lifted from nail bed. Should I put a bandaide on it or let it go?
put some neosporin on it to kill bacteria and then put a bandaid on it to prevent infection. :)
