It is due to fungal infection of the toenail, onycomycosis.

you can use an antifungal cream from the pharmacy called lamsil on it daily . Be patient , it will take months to cure.

If that doesn't work , see your doctor for antifungal pills. these are expensive and need to be taken for 4 months straight. What causes the discolouration of my big toe nail, when getting athletes foot? how can i get rid of it? please
See your doctor! There a multiple oral treatments for fungal infection around now. They will kill even your athlete's foot problems. The toenail, however, needs to grow out. Probably take a year or so.
It usually grows out.

However, if its brittle, and fungus problems, defintiely see a doctor to give you lotion for it.
